Stratford Roofing Experts was founded in 2003 by James Whitfield, a Stratford-born roofer who had trained with a Warwick-based contractor through the 1990s before setting up independently in the town he grew up in. The business has remained family-run since, with James's son Tom joining the team in 2015 and Dan Ashworth — who specialises in conservation area and listed building work — joining in 2018.
We are based in Stratford-upon-Avon and work across a 20-mile radius covering Warwick, Royal Leamington Spa, Kenilworth, Alcester, Shipston-on-Stour, Henley-in-Arden and the surrounding Warwickshire villages. We are not a national company routing work to subcontractors. It is our team on every job.
We could have grown the business more aggressively. We chose not to, because the quality of every job matters more to us than the volume. We carry out every survey ourselves, quote every job in writing, and put our own team on site. When James or Tom surveys your roof, the same people will be doing the work. That is not something a larger business can offer.

We have worked within the Old Town conservation area for the full twenty years of the business. We understand the material requirements — clay plain tiles from conservation suppliers, hydraulic lime mortar, code lead flashings — and the consent process for listed building work. Dan Ashworth, who joined us from a specialist heritage contractor, handles all our conservation and listed building surveys and acts as the technical lead on complex historic fabric work.
