What Is the Ridge and Why Does the Mortar Fail?
The ridge is the capping that covers the apex of the roof where the two slopes meet. This mortar is permanently exposed to full weathering — UV, rain, frost, thermal expansion and contraction — for the full life of the roof. Feldon Plain Properties: Higher Failure Rate
Ridge mortar failure is significantly more frequent on the open Feldon plain around Wellesbourne, Kineton, Southam and Harbury than on equivalent properties in the sheltered Avon Valley. The sustained south-westerly and westerly winds that cross the open plain create higher lateral loads on ridge tiles. A ridge that would remain sound for 30 years in sheltered Stratford may fail in 20 years on an exposed Harbury ridge.
