In the first hour of emergency roof damage, prioritise safety: move people and valuables from under the leak, contain water with buckets, and switch off electrics if water is near fittings. Do not go onto the roof. Photograph everything for insurance, then call a roofer for make-safe. We answer 24/7.
Storm damage or a sudden roof failure is one of the more stressful situations a homeowner faces. The decisions made in the first hour affect how much internal damage occurs, how strong your insurance position is, and how quickly the right repair gets done. This guide covers the steps in the correct order.
Step 1: Contain the Internal Damage
If water is actively entering the building, the first priority is not the roof — it is the inside of your house. Lay towels under active drips, place buckets and containers to catch water, and move furniture, electronics and valuables away from the wet area. If water has pooled on a ceiling and the ceiling plaster is bulging, consider whether to create a small controlled release point with a screwdriver — a bucketful of water released in a controlled drip does far less damage than a ceiling board collapsing under the weight.
The Association of British Insurers advises prioritising safety and documentation in the first hour of storm damage, arranging make-safe to limit further loss before full repair is authorised.

Step 2: Photograph Everything Before Anyone Touches It
Before calling anyone, photograph the internal damage and the external roof from the ground. Use your phone's zoom to document displaced tiles, open gaps or anything visibly wrong from the garden. This documentation is critical for any insurance claim. Adjusters routinely request pre-make-safe evidence — photographs taken after a roofer has already been on site are far less useful than photographs taken before.
Photograph: the ceiling or wall showing active ingress, any visible displacement from the ground, the affected internal rooms, and any water-damaged contents that may support a claim.
Step 3: Call a Local Emergency Roofer — Not a Door-Knocker
Call 01789 509542 for same-day emergency response across Stratford and Warwickshire. When you call, tell us: the nature of the problem (displaced tiles, active leak, storm damage), whether there is active internal ingress, and your postcode. We attend genuine emergencies — active ingress, structural displacement, tiles off the roof — as same-day priorities across CV37 and surrounding Warwickshire postcodes.
Do not accept help from anyone who knocks on your door uninvited after a storm. Storm-chasing operators — roofers who follow storm events looking for vulnerable homeowners — are the most common source of overpriced, underdelivered emergency work in the UK roofing trade. They are typically not local, not insured to an appropriate level, and not accountable once they have been paid. If someone arrives at your door unsolicited, thank them and decline.
What the Emergency Visit Involves
A legitimate emergency call-out has two phases. First, make-safe: stop the active ingress, secure or remove displaced elements, and apply temporary protection (breathable cover membrane, not plastic sheeting that traps moisture). Second, assessment and quote: a written description of what failed, why, and what the permanent repair requires. The permanent repair is either carried out at the same visit if materials are on the van, or on a scheduled return.
We provide a written post-visit report that includes photographs of the failure, the make-safe actions taken, and the quoted permanent repair. This report is provided to the insurance company if a claim is being made.
Insurance Claims: The Sequence That Matters
Notify your insurer as soon as reasonably possible after the event — most policies require notification within a specified period, often 30 days. Tell them you have arranged emergency make-safe to prevent further damage (this is always acceptable and expected). Do not carry out permanent repair before the insurer has acknowledged the claim if the repair cost is significant — some policies require the insurer's surveyor to inspect before permanent work proceeds.
We provide written cause-of-damage reports that satisfy most UK residential insurers' documentation requirements for storm damage claims.
